OSHA-Compliant Confined Spaces & Confined Space Equipment

Any person who makes entry into a confined space is an entrant and must be trained as an entrant. This entrant training requirement includes rescuers. The three things this confined space training must include are:
  • The nature of the hazards.
  • The actions to take when exposed to hazards.
  • How to arrange for a rescue.
Confined space entrants should be trained on any and all hazards they may be exposed to while in the confined space to include the consequences and symptoms from exposure to any identifiable hazards. All workers should be trained on the confined space equipment required for entry, work and rescue including the proper use of personal protective equipment and a procedure to evacuate the confined space and to alert the attendant(s) in the event of an emergency. These attendants should be able to realize the behavioral effects of hazard exposure in entrants, they must be able to rescue the entrants without entering into the confined space, they must be able to warn entrants of potential hazards and alert them if an evacuation must be made, attendants must also be able to manage the confined space, attendants must take action when an unauthorized person or personnel approach, attempt to enter or enter into a confined space. A supervisor must also be present when work is being performed within a confined space, the supervisor should be trained on all confined space equipment and emergency or rescue services and procedures, they must be able to identify the potential hazards and consequences of exposure to those hazards. Like attendants supervisors must take action when unauthorized entrants approach or enter a confined space permit space. Supervisors must also manage a confined space entry permit and verification process, this is a data log of what tests were performed and what procedures and confined space equipment is in place.
